What’s The Synchronicity Series?

Hello, Friends—those known and, I hope, soon-to-be ones here,

I’m a writer, editor, curator and adjunct professor who produces cultural content for a range of organizations, including museums, publishers, wineries, and foundations. I’ve authored Oyster Culture, Silent Nests, and a Penguin Random House cookbook and have written on photography for LensCulture, photograph magazine and other pubs. Currently I’m re-engaged with writing short stories and longer format hybrid work exploring the confluence of history, memory and images. More here at doreenschmid.com.

A native New Yorker, I’ve lived in a vineyard in California, a 15th c. della Robbia studio in Florence, an immigrant (not ex-pat) Doha neighborhood, and now part-time in Vermont—where I occasionally throw pots and am beset by a bear besting my bees. Wherever I’m living the best take-away is always the peeps.

The life of a Substack is dependent on a writer’s work exchanging oxygen with the world. I’ve started this one to explore, question, ponder—and ask you how you feel about—the seemingly random incidents of coincidence in our lives. I’m tickled by names, news, mentions, occurring in tandem, and more interested in how these occurrences make you feel than in extracting some grand meaning from them. Do you feel blessed—or plagued—by multiple instances connecting life’s random moments? Please share! Join me in poking about the treasure chests and minefields of serendipity by commenting at the end of posts, or just replying to me.
